"Axion estin" (mp3 audio)
“It is truly meet bless you Mother of God”
This is a “megalynarion” There is a cell in mount Athos where a monk was praying wile an angel came and taught him this particular hymn to the Holy Virgin. The cell still exists today and is known by the name “Axion estin”. There is also a wonder-working icon of the same name at Protaton, Karyes, Mount Athos. Kosmas the Melodist (9th c.) composed the second part of the hymn. This hymn has been put to melody thousands of times. This one is in 1st plagal mode, composer Michail Chatziathanassiou (19th c)
“Canon” is a long poem that is constituted from eight “odes”. Every ode describes a scene from the Old or the New Testament (e.g. the prayers of Zacharias, the holy 3 kids in the fire, Ionas end the sea-monster, the prayer of the Holy Virgin). Simultaneously praises the event or the saint of the day. This one praises the Meeting of the Lord in the Temple. Hymnographer is the same Kosmas the Melodist, mode 3rd, composer Petros Peloponissios (18th c.)
There is a preparation 40 days period of feast and prayer before Easter. The vespers of each Lenden Sunday has one “idiomelon”, a unique hymn. This one is of the 5th Sunday. Both text and melody underline the difference between the poor Lazarus and the cruel reach man. Actually both figures work as examples: to follow or to avoid. Mode 1st plagal, composer Iakovos Protopsaltis (18th c.)
"Kassiani" (mp3 audio)
The services of the Great and Holy Week are adorned by the most beautiful hymns. This is the “doxastikon” of the “aposticha” of the Great and Holy Tuesday, written by the nun Kassiani, a woman hymnographer of the 9th century. Mode 4th plagal, composer Konstantinos Prigos (20th c.)
"Efrixe" (mp3 audio)
There are long hymns with slow tempo to cover the time consuming preparation of an event. Other hymns are short and fast so you get the feeling that the service performs faster. Hymns of medium size and moderate tempo manage to praise the saint, or unveil the story avoiding the saturation point.
This one is a long hymn, a “kalophonikos irmos”. Text refers to the events that followed Jesus’ crucifixion: the earthquake, the darkening of the sun et.c.
"Te-ri-rem" (mp3 audio)
The hymn is accompanied by a “kratima” that is the repetition of the syllables “te-ri-rem” which is said to be the hymn of the Angels to the Holy Virgin. Mode 1st plagal, composer Panagiotis Chalantzoglou (19th c.)
